There was a tremendous bang as the roof was wrenched from our house and Mum and Dad joined us under the bed. I peered out from under the mattress to see the ceilings lift and the eerie grey sky above. The gusts slammed against the walls and made them bend and curve. The furniture along the walls smashed to the floor. |

Extract from 12 year old Megan Smith's tale. |
"Cyclone Larry - Tales of survival from the children of North Queensland" contains over 250 stories and artwork from the children who experienced the worst cyclone ever to hit the North.
Throughout the 92 pages, the children tell of their fears, their hopes and their reactions before, during and after the cyclone. Some use simple words but most describe an event that others could not even begin to imagine.
The accompanying artwork depicts a range of responses but common images are the vortexs of wind and the devastation of the physical environment. The reader is able to get a real feeling for what it was like during Cyclone Larry.
This unique book is valuable for many reasons, but most of all because it has recorded the tales of the brave children who survived Cyclone Larry and in doing so have given them an opportunity to share their experiences with others.

The Cyclone Larry Book Project began with the local show which saw all schools in the district displaying their student's cyclone stories and artwork. Members of MHO saw an opportunity to put these wonderful stories and artwork into a book and so set about collecting them from the kindergartens and schools with the hope of getting it published.
Ergon Energy was approached and very generously came on board to sponsor the book to completion. The result, a true testiment to the children of our area. We hope that the book will be an opportunity for healing, to discuss common experiences and to start to look towards the future together.
With all proceeds from the sale of the book going towards the Community Playgrounds Projects - it is hoped that it will make a difference in more ways than one.
