Mothers Helping Others Inc.
The event of Cyclone Larry to our town of Innisfail changed our lives forever. Six months on, the impact of the cyclone continues to be felt.
The damage to our children's playgrounds throughout the town was the motivation for a small group of mothers to band together and form Mothers Helping Others Inc. With so much infrastructure damaged, we realised that such playgrounds would be at the bottom of the local governments list, so we decided to do something about it ourselves. The Community Playgrounds Project was formed!
Cyclone Larry
Tales of Survival from the children of North Queensland. |
.
This wonderful book contains over 250 stories, poems and artworks from the children of North Queensland who personally experienced Cyclone Larry. The stories tell of the children's mixed feelings about the cyclone whether terrified or safe, sad or happy or just plain relief to be alive. As you would expect, no story or artwork is the same.
Ergon Energy has been responsible for turning our idea into a reality. With the finanicial support from Ergon, we have been able to make a professional product in which to further fundraise for our Community Playgrounds Project. Read more about their supporting role on the Cyclone Larry Book Page.

The Playgrounds Project
Immediately after the cyclone, the children of the Johnstone Shire were limited in where they could go and what they could do. Their playgrounds and parks were literally littered with debris. While the council and helpers did a sterling job of the clearing of debris, the playgrounds had, in some cases, been badly damaged.
All proceeds from the sale of the book "Cyclone Larry - Tales of Survival from the children of North Queensland" will go towards making the playgrounds safe and family friendly through either refurbishment of equipment, the addition of all weather covers and fences.
